Re: the miracle of engine starting?

Fellas, It was in reverse position when it ran in reverse! I was toggling between forward and reverse when it started in reverse. That was the direction of the dock so i quickly slipped into the forward Position. It would not run in forward. I got a very good suggestion from Wesley, plumb the drain ...

Re: the miracle of engine starting?

She did run forward eventually and we went up the river. I always go upstream first.
Thanks for all the help put forward!

Re: the miracle of engine starting?

I thought I had it warmed but your suggestion is logical however, it ran in reverse.
I suppose I could open the cock on the secondary and close the simpling valve which would make it a single?

the miracle of engine starting?

I took the big boat out today with a friend to help. Had 120# of pressure as we pushed off from the dock. Steam has been leaking through the cylinders and packing for 15 minutes. LETS GO Kerplunk the engine moves a bit and stops. I need it to run! I try reverse then forward to oscillate it in hopes ...

Re: Torque versus speed for steam engine

You have said >>> "A taller pitch prop is harder on the engine wear surfaces." I AGREE More torque & slower RPM equals same "HP" as higher RPM and lower torque. I want slower engine speed so it's a trade-off. I think the K engine has enough torque to satisfy the Prop BUT, if it doesn't, I wont burn ...

Re: Torque versus speed for steam engine

My 26" prop clears about 1/2". So bigger diameter is not possible. But going from 28 pitch to 38 pitch is a 35% increase. I have purchased the Prop off of EBAY and I will have to make a sleeve for the bore. My shaft is 1.5 and the big end of the bore is 2.25. It does have a three bolt pattern on the...

Re: Torque versus speed for steam engine

Thanks for looking Wesley. You may remember that my boat has the Navy K engine for which you so kindly supplied me prints. It runs too fast and I am going to try this 26X38 prop. Not too hard to try!

Torque versus speed for steam engine

Since the pressure of the steam is 100% at zero rpm, how does the Hp unfold as the rpm increases? I have a Navy K engine that "seems" to run too fast (rpm). I was told by the builder that the 28 inch pitch of the 26 inch prop was probably to low. I want the engine to run more slowly and I have found...

Re: PDF Book on Triple and Quadruple Expansion engines

Mikes reduction in the complexity and simplification of the (perceived) dilemma is a much better question. Can this be explained ( a feel for it) without the use of Black magic? The simpleton thinking (mine) would say that the pressure can't be different anywhere in the boiler (perhaps some slight v...

Re: PDF Book on Triple and Quadruple Expansion engines

In the multi expansion and reheat engine, the steam is returned to the flue after the primary exhaust right? You raise the pressure of the steam exhausting from the primary by running it back through the flue, If you raise the temperature of the steam, you raise the pressure. Now you have a higher p...
