Re: Artemis Has A New Home

I plan on trying to document this rebuild as I go since it feel it's worth sharing. Justin thanks for that video and walk around of Artemis. I subscribed and am eager to watch your progress! There are several options for fuel. I tend to think of that as one of the benefits of a steamboat, they real...

Re: The Smokestack NASBA

Certainly if anyone is willing to get an account on this forum they can make a post in the 'Rally Reports' about a steamboat meet. An email list where anyone with an email address can subscribe ala listserv might be useful.. There are actually a lot of free marketing services that offer email lists ...

Re: Steam Tug Alva B - Engine Question

Here is an example of a single rotary valve steam engine:

Ron is probably correct that the drawing may be partially representative, some of the linkages in the drawing look quite skinny.

Oddball steam engines sure are interesting!

Christmas Gifts for a Steamboater

Hope everyone is having a good Christmas, or whatever holidays you may celebrate! My sister got me some of the Battleship New Jersey Teak Decking, as well as tickets to go visit Battleship New Jersey in person! Kind of neat to have a piece of such a historic steam vessel! I just hope if I bring it o...

Re: Christmas Puzzle?

Pete, One important question is how much of a conversion are you willing to fabricate yourself or are you wanting an off the shelf medical device that is complete that may just need a little bit of assembly. One idea that came to mind are ebike conversion kits available from ebay and elsewhere. If y...

Re: Steam Yacht Cangarda FOR SALE

I have some more video from John York of when they were still in the San Francisco bay trying to tune the computer boiler controls. Lots of trial and error. Here's a post with some pictures on Cangarda's Boiler touchscreen controls: https://panbo.com/cangarda-the-touchscreen-steam-yacht/ One of the...

Re: Renewing Babbit Bearing

The bars will probably not have been original. The bars are original, the grain is very specific and matches the other parts. What isn't original is that this engine was originally in a car, the engine hung below the chassis. The original reversing lever came up through the floor of the car and had...

Re: Renewing Babbit Bearing

Darn.

Unfortunately I can't use the bushing idea because width of the slot is just around 1/4", it's within 0.005" of the pin size. Won't be space for any bearing material on the sides of the slot. Potentially I could widen the slot a little.

Re: Renewing Babbit Bearing

What about the bronze leaded bearing filed on two sides parallel like this, then filled in with soft metal:

Re: Renewing Babbit Bearing

If the slot is wider than the pin, even by a small amount, then shape a piece of brass/bronze to fit as best you can and soft solder it in. Is there an advantage to soft solder vs babbitt for this application? RNoe recommended Grade 2 Nickel-Babbitt and that sounded pretty good to me. What if I got...
