Mike, thanks for the reminder to check the thread form. 1/4-20 threaded rod felt right threading into the machine, but I don't know if whitworth might also fit. I'll double check. I have most of the original gib screws, so I should be able to be sure fairly easily.
Thanks!
Scott

Re: Seeking Advice on Milling Machine
Quote: "And these screws are M6-1.25." 1.25 pitch lead equals .0492" 20 threads per inch equals .050" pitch lead. 6mm equals .236" 1/4" equals .250" I think you have 1/4-20 there. Try a 1/4-20 bottoming tap in the hole. -Ron If there was an egg-on-my-face emogi, I think I'd have to use it now. Ron,...

Re: Seeking Advice on Milling Machine
I'll double check the threads today. Everything else on the machine is metric, so I didn't think to try 1/4-20. I checked one of the original gib screws against M6 bolts (seemed to match for diameter) and M8-1.25 bolts (matched for pitch) at the hardware store, though not with a micrometer. This mac...

Re: Seeking Advice on Milling Machine
Thanks to all for the advice and input - the mill is now in my shop, and everything looks good EXCEPT that it's missing a couple of the gib adjusting screws. And these screws are M6-1.25. As far as I can tell, Nobody stocks bolts/screws in this size. Nobody. M6-1.0 is standard coarse thread, with fi...

Re: Seeking Advice on Milling Machine
I just saw the machine in person - it looks to have been used relatively little. Backlash on threads is consistent down the length of each screw. Runs smoothly. The table looks almost new - someone had mounted a small vice in it, bolted through a piece of masonite protecting the whole table. It look...

Seeking Advice on Milling Machine
Does anyone have knowledge of or experience with older ENCO machines? I'm looking at a 1979 vintage Vertical Turret Milling Machine, model LW-VO-AT. It appears to be a Bridgeport knockoff. Asking price is $900, and it looks like it's had low hours in a home shop for the past 35 years. I'm ok for now...

Re: single acting enclosed crankcase
I concede, had enough free time today to crunch down the numbers, 49,000 lbs a day to process, even with heating every building on my farm and my house I'd still have to dump excess heat. It quickly turned into a rube Goldberg mostrocity of bottoming cycles and working fluids. If anything, having w...

Re: Fire space for solid fuel firing
Bart, Thanks for the response. The horizontal Ofeldt certainly appeals from a height perspective - I'd like the boiler not to tower above the gunnel. And in the canoe, there would be no objection to making it very wide (relatively speaking). However, I've always been suspicious about the flow path f...

Re: Ofeldt construction detail question
Ron, I like the idea of the hydraulic tubing and brazing. At this small size, I'm sure I could still wind them myself and braze them in. Re: water level control: This will DEFINITELY be automatic. The current plan is to have a large bore, geared down piston pump with variable stroke. The stroke will...

Ofeldt construction detail question
I'm planning a small boiler with a 4" drum and 4" diameter coils in schedule K copper for wood firing at up to 150 psi. On all the Ofeldt builds I have seen with steel drums and copper tubes, there are always steel nipples welded into the drum with the copper silver soldered or brazed into the nippl...
