Re: Steam Cylinder Patternmaking

Ah well, I was kind of hoping that question would not be raised! I posted the patterns off to a foundry I had not used before. They took ages to acknowledge receiving them and only after much prompting. A further long time time went by, to the extent that I forgot about them. On enquiry they eventua...

Re: Building a Three Drum Watertube Boiler

Ken – yes the Cunifer watertubes are to be expanded into the drums, but I have not started this yet. I re-reamed the holes from 12mm to 12.1mm which gives a sliding fit - apologies for forgetting to say this in the thread. The expander is a Wicksteed E2 bought direct from them http://www.wicksteed.c...

Re: Building a Three Drum Watertube Boiler

Noel, that is excellent news. I hope you will find better ways of doing things, and keep us posted with lots of photos. I would recommend - and so does John King - that you build and test the pressure vessel first and then put the finished assembly into the casing. As Roger Eske's boiler on page 1 o...

Re: Attaching engine to stringers

West advocate drilling oversize holes in the wood and setting your hold-down studs in epoxy. But this would not be advisable where the studs may become hot, such as for a boiler, as it may melt the epoxy. :o For my boiler, I plan to use cross dowel nuts. If you have ever built an Ikea bed you will k...

Re: Building a Three Drum Watertube Boiler

This thread stopped all of a sudden in May. It's had an awful lot of viewings since then so I should explain that l've been busy working on another boat and will hopefully finish that and get back to the boiler before too long. The funnel is made, and Calum has re-made a lot of the casing as my shee...

Lovely woodwork Ron. How did you make the curved top & bottom rails on the doors - are they laminated ? Steamed?

Making Curved Coaming Corners

I found making the coaming to be one of the hardest parts of my steam launch build, especially forming the tight rear corners. I had another coaming to do this week, and found a description of a way of making curves in a book on bandsawing that worked well. So thought I would share it here. Start wi...

Perhaps you may not be aware that The Steamboat Association of GB has a library of boiler designs.

Re: My 24' Launch

Hi Steve your boat looks great - a very pleasing curvey front end. Thanks for posting the pics of your stern tube too. I am also a member of a Yahoo group for builders of Selway Fisher designs. The word there is that using West's peel ply over your wet epoxy sheathing greatly reduces the sanding aft...
