Re: What are the concerns/safety of an unfired >100C vessel
Bart What you suggest is very similar to what happens with a wet accumulator on a steam catapult. Older cats used dry receivers that were nothing more than unfired steam drums. These had to be refilled after each launch, and did not maintain a constant pressure during the launch. One or two boilers ...

Re: What are the concerns/safety of an unfired >100C vessel
In short yes I can. If the pressure in the water leg is the same as that of the steam the temperature will not be greater than that of the steam.

Re: What are the concerns/safety of an unfired >100C vessel
Ron beat me to it. The water and steam in the boiler will be the same temperature (366deg F @ 150 PSI). If there is a part of the heated surface that receives more energy than others it won't make the water hotter, it makes it produce more steam. FYI: Google Steam catapult accumulators, they preform...

Re: Monotube Boiler Design – Radical Thinking
Maybe just adding to what's been said, but here goes: The Knox class DE that I was a BT on had the following fuel power characteristics: RPM-------------- 122----------------- 244 Shaft HP--------- 4750---------------- 35000 FO in 100#/hr--- 44------------------- 244 I won't dispute that a mono tube...

Re: Best Suggestions for Poor mans compound?
Basically isn't this is what Mallet did when compounding using two separate sets of drivers on an articulated locomotive. As locomotives got bigger power was limited by the size of LP cylinders that could be fitted to the front drivers along with control problems associated with the LP engine such a...

Re: A question of a Lone skipper falling overboard
The story was told around Cordova Alaska of a fisherman that while running alone at about 6 knots and towing a 15 to 20 foot skiff managed to fall of the bow of the boat. His first concern was getting deep enough to clear the prop. He then managed to popup in time to grab onto the skiff's towline, s...

Re: Lightning Vulnerability for Steamboats.
A Google search for sailboat lightning protection will yield a wealth of information on the subject. Also an AM radio tuned to the low end of the dial, if I remember right, can act as a lightning detector by listening to the static spikes. Works for strikes within 10 miles or so. Won't give directio...

Re: Oceanid's engine for sale.
I see Oceanid's Scotch boiler is also listed for sale on the same site under non railroad steam. Asking $5000 might need some tube work.
Would be a nice combo for someone with the boat and the money to match, which isn't me.
Just an FYI
