Re: EOT's on Larger British Steam Launches
You could probably take one of those reproduction EOT lamps, gut the insides and make it into something that would work just fine. The cosmetic part is ready to go, all you would have to do is make the bits for cable and chain linkage.
Hmmm... sounds like a fun project.

Re: Signal/Deck gun
We've been buying Goex black powder from Coonies for our ridiculously large arsenal at the Museum. We usually get 50lbs. or so at a time, cannon grade for the main charge and 4fg for priming. Several year ago I was skipper on Lady Washington for the first tour down the coast with Hawaiian Chieftain....

Re: Painting Steel
How about galvanizing? I just had 375# of steel engine beds done and it was $142, which I thought was pretty good. They acid dip them to clean the steel before the hot dip.

Re: Musings of an Idiot
Mike, That's the Berkeley, one of my babies. The reversing engine is operated by air to move the way shaft and links. There is a Morse push-pull cable attached to the reversing engine valve gear that actuates the directional control valve to the hydraulic motor on the jacking gear. Another Morse cab...

Re: Bearing clearance
You can get laminated brass shim stock from McMaster Carr. This allows for future bearing adjustments by peeling off a layer as needed.

Re: white stuff on pipes
I had to replace a section of lagging on the steam line to Medea's windlass a couple years ago. We had some sections of rigid non-asbestos pipe insulation that I fitted to the straight runs and mitered around the ells. To finish off I used 3 oz. glass cloth and lagging adhesive which can be painted ...

Re: Designing a new engine for a big(ger) boat...
Bart, Chad O'Conner had a 2 cylinder uniflow engine of his own design in "Well Stacked". If I remember correctly it was fully enclosed and a really neat installation. You might be able to find someone who knows more of the details of the design so you don't have to reinvent the wheel. I've lost trac...
