"In Finland boilers under 1.5 bar (72.5 psi) absolute pressure (0.5 bar gauge pressure) are not considered as pressure devices that need inspection. If condensator is used, that would give good enthalpy difference, even better if steam is superheated. Steam volumes would be comparatively huge, but h...

Re: New guy on the forum
Hello Curt and welcome to the forum. Getting a steamboat together can cover a large range of spending. For a boat in the 18-22 foot range a good used steamboat can be had at reasonable prices, depending on what is considered reasonable. Finding one with Corliss rotary valve gear will be quite diffic...

Re: A Funny Looking Slide Valve
Excellent work, as usual from you. The oil slots on the slide valve is new to me, although I have only been involved with the study of steam engines for 70 years now.

Don's writings... "The primary saviour comes in many variations of the Hackworth family of gears and near relatives like the Bremme and Greenly lever systems." This refers to the ability of the Bremme gear to properly to be a "saviour" of Hackworth-like valve gear which has inherent error in timing ...

Re: Valve Gear Simulation
The graph presented on my 31 Jan 2022 post within this thread shows the performance of the Marshall/Bremme (or Klug) valve gear on my engine. There are 7 useful link-up notches forward, and 7 useful notches in reverse. Cutoff from 30% to 85% stroke is illustrated throughout this range, in forward an...

This supply house also has other steam accessories, with better prices than I have seen for years. Boiler gauge glass set, with ball checks at $55.00, steam traps, steam pressure regulators, and high pressure steam hose

Re: Another Sidewheeler Building
The first layer of Paddle-box veneer is coated with epoxy and clamped down on the upper surface of each piece. The "half circle" pieces on each side of a paddle-box is 1/2 inch plywood, that will also get mahogany veneer on the inboard side. The outboard side will be getting a pattern cut into the s...

Re: Another Sidewheeler Building
Boatbuilding partner Mark Grubb, fitting veneer wood to paddle splash guards. A few layers of this wood, placed with epoxy, and a final layer of Mahogany veneer should look good Sort of like making curved plywood.
