Re: Help Air Pump needed

A wet vacuum pump will remove condensate and maintain vacuum exhaust for better economy. The pump running at engine speed should have about 1/2 the bore, and 1/2 the stroke of the main engine's cylinder. With reasonable packings this will handle air leakage and easily pump out all the condensate. I ...

Re: Greetings from Strasburg, PA, USA

Nice hull building, looks like it will do well. I also see motorcycles in the background, some of us have had a few. Do you know Kelly Andersen of the Strasburg RR?

You can post a few pictures directly onto this forum in your reply, I think the limit is 250k size for any one photo. Saves going thru other host websites.

Re: Experimental Instrumentation

Electronic Pressure Transducers work well with recording engine cylinder pressure. Their response time is on the order of fractions of mili-seconds, so they are fast enough to record an "indicator diagram" for steam engines. As far as temperature ratings, it is a simple matter to put a water leg int...

Re: Engine Design RPM

Engine RPM is determined based on the mechanical limitations of the engine, (mostly stresses associated with engine pressure forces and inertia loads), fluid flow limitations in getting the steam into and exhaust out of the cylinder, and by the requirements of the driven machinery. In general, with ...

Re: Experimental Instrumentation

A pressure gauge pigtail is used to protect the pressure gauge from the effect of hot pressure media such as steam. The siphon allows condensate to form and be collected inside the pigtail portion of the siphon, preventing the hot media from coming in direct contact with the pressure instrument. The...

Re: Hotwells - Designs and building

Two additional relevant points; Do not use compounded cylinder oil, it forms an unbreakable emulsion with water. Straight mineral oil can be separated from condensate, and "Green Velvet" markets this oil for condensing steamers that wish to re-use their condensate. Plastic oil absorbing media, which...

Re: John Fitch Steamboat Model, 1790

The model will be used for demo purposes, and the museam would like to eventually make a people carying steamer, if they can secure funding. I told them that anything over 40 feet long will not be practical, as Coast Guard exemption only applies to steamboats 40 feet or less in length. But a 39 foot...
