Re: steamboat Emerald

I will be calling him today. As far as cunifer/kunifer/and whatever else they call it. I've quite some trouble finding many suppliers in North America as well, though there seems to be more than just a few years ago. Here are a few: http://www.fedhillusa.com/ http://www.farmerscopper.com/copper-nic...

Re: Desuperheater question

Tom, "Out of curiosity, where can you access a copy of the ASME BPVC" You can buy it from the ASME, I think for a couple of thousand dollars for the whole set. The engineering firm I worked for (45 years so far) is certified to make unfired pressure vessels and boilers, and thus has full sets of AS...

Re: Desuperheater question

Adding a couple of points to Bart's list, needed to comply with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code: No. 6 Boiler check valve, followed by an Isolation Valve If the economizer can be isolated and bypassed, then the economizer itself requires pressure relief protection because it then becomes a...

Re: Desuperheater question

Trying to wrap my head around the concept a little bit. First, why use a steam coil instead of a water coil? If you're worried about burning out the coil, water would transfer heat away faster, and should prolong service life. It would also make one hell of an economizer, especially if steam product...

This (if it shows ok) is one I have designed.
That's a really clever and fascinating design. How do you anticipate dealing with condensation in the crankcase?

Re: Boiler feed pump ?

Ian, I've been giving a lot of thought to this lately as I re (x4) design my engine. Given the general difficulty in sourcing a feedwater pump, it doesn't seem that constructing one should be extremely difficult by comparison. A single-acting pump should be able to work with some heavy steel flanged...

Re: Favourite cylinder lubrication

I believe Cyberbadger purchased a few gallons of Chevron W460 a few years ago to try in his engine, I do't believe he ever gave a report on how it worked though.

Marina Difficulties?

Has anyone experienced difficulties when navigating a marina? Specifically in regards to the fuel docks, and the prohibition of flame in those areas.

Re: Con-rods and length

With all the concern about deformation and weld stress, why not build up an engine using threaded connections? It seems like the easiest way to avoid weld issues in the engine would be to avoid welding the engine at all.
