Re: Suitable Grease for Engines

The eccentric straps on Otter's engine are not hot to the touch after hours of steaming, despite occasional drips from the valve gland.

Re: Steam powered weed whacker

Well, I did run Otter on a converted refrigeration compressor for 20 years... so it can work.

Re: Economizer Question

Typically, a feedwater heater heats water going into the boiler using exhaust heat. An economizer is in the flue gas exhaust path and also heats the water going into the boiler. Economizers may need to be made of steel if the boiler is over fired for its heating surface; I've had 1/2" copper tube as...

Re: Wrapping Hot Lines

I like to paint the line with white rubber meant for sealing trailer roofs - works well and doesn't take so many coats as enamel.
Covering w/ canvas and lagging adhesive also works well.

Re: HELP!, 1919 boiler identification

I'm very curious about a boiler that was made in 1919 and has what looks like arc welded construction.

Down here where it gets warm, we prefer to lag the steamboat rather than the engineer. You guys up there where it gets cold can wrap yourself in rope if you like....

Re: Confirmation of Water Consumption

How about a vaporizing oil burner, no propane, no steam, no electricity, no engine driven pump, just a bicycle pump to charge the fuel tank, and a hot coil to vaporize the oil. Coleman camp stoves, camp lanterns, Stanley Steamers, and many others. used this setup. I've used one of these for a while...

Re: Confirmation of Water Consumption

Hm. I'm a little horrified by all this. I was out steaming around for two hours last week and the boiler level didn't vary a fraction of an inch. I have ten gallons of makeup water in two jugs and I haven't opened them in a month. Now I burn wood and have no stack blower and I tend to fuss with lea...
