Re: Engine wanted-UK

I haven't got the boiler yet, but I'm in contact with the seller of the part built Two drum water tube steam boiler on the SBA small ads. If we can put a deal together I'd be happy with that one. If you are thinking of selling your 5a I could well be interested. Internet is slow and irregular here, ...

Re: Engine wanted-UK

Thanks for that update. Can you PM if you wish to sell it with details of what you're asking and where it is located. Best wishes from a sunny Nepal ! Ian, I've now tested that hybrid 5A on steam and it runs like a dream (both ways). Incidentally I didn't mention that it came from Cyril Taylor's est...

Engine wanted-UK

Good day folks. I'm just in the early days of putting together my next project. I've decided upon the boat to build, a 15ft, 6ft beam open launch. I've probably sourced a boiler which has the capacity to cope with any suitable engine I fit. All I need to do is decide upon and locate a suitable engin...

Re: Boiler costs ?

Thanks for that. Looks as though it could be just what I'm after. Unfortunately I depart for Nepal on Wednesday and won't be back until early April, so won't be able really to pursue in the meantime. Many thanks Ian Hi Ian there is a suitable boiler for sale on the SBA website. It needs finishing bu...

Re: Boiler costs ?

Once again, many thanks as any advice is greatly appreciated. The whole boiler issue is going to be "challenging" but not insurmountable. If it was too easy, where would the fun be? I'm TOTALLY with you on the "fire to power" concept. Off to Nepal for two months as of tomorrow, just hope there's roo...

Re: Boiler costs ?

Excellent, thanks for the encouragement. I contacted my old engineering lecturer from college this morning and it turns out that 40 years ago he built a Stuart 5A and only LAST WEEK he thought that he'd start building a boiler for it ! Not only does he live less than 10 miles from me, but he is a gu...

Re: Initial costings ?

That's just the sort of thing I'll be after. I plan to start sourcing the major components prior to starting the project, so that I won't be in for some nasty surprises when the boat is nearing completion. Once I know what sort of funds I'll need for the boiler, I'll then know my engine budget. I'm ...

Boiler costs ?

Having researched and put together a specification for my proposed project, a Selway Fisher Rose the main outstanding item is the boiler. I fancy the idea of a non-condensing type, but rather naively thought that I could source one for about £1500. I appreciate that budgets need to be flexible and h...

Re: Initial costings ?

Thanks for that. The engine is pretty much what I expected, but the boiler's a bit of a surprise. I was rather hoping to get one for about £1500, wishful thinking perhaps ? Thanks Ian Your problem is finding them. The SBA classifieds and ebay are the best bets. Preston Services sell 2nd hand steam s...

Initial costings ?

I'm just in the early days of preparing my next project and have ordered a set of study plans from Selway Fisher for their Rose design. I'll be looking to power this with a Suart 5A with reversing gear and and a suitable non-condensing boiler. What sort of money would I be looking at for the purchas...
