Re: Building a Big Engine

You might consider an end run around this problem. Find a hunk of tubing that is already the right I.D. Either some Shelby tubing or a suitable hydraulic cylinder. Even if the tube doesn't have a good enough finish, you can certainly hone it. If there are bosses and the like needed on the outside, t...

Leno's Corliss

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted here before now. Hardly boat related and full of entertaining misinformation but still fun.

Re: boat trailer question

Tradeoffs for me, on both my 25' steam launch and my 25' "Pocket Trawler", have been between not having the rudder lower bearing drag on the ground when going over curbs in such things as gas stations, v.s having the boat up higher from the ground and drowning my tow vehicle brakes on launch ramps. ...

Re: Steam Thistle Cluaran

My one cylinder engine can tick over fairly slowly but not, I suspect, below perhaps 20 r.p.m. Without a MUCH larger flywheel, that is!

Re: Steam Thistle Cluaran

Russ, Sometime please measure the total current draw. Adding up the numbers in the specifications gives a total of 30 mA which sounds about right but up in the order area you have to select a power input (only one selection allowed!) that is wildly higher. I assume that this high number is just some...

Re: Steam Thistle Cluaran

Russ, Thanks for the links! Much more pleasing than my calibrated bike speedo solution and not that much more expensive. For anyone wishing to use a bike speedometer, here is my information: All of the bike speedos I've fiddled with calibrate with a number that is the diameter of the bike wheel in m...

Fred,

Reading about all of the stuff under your foredeck, I am reminded of this:

Mind bending.

Re: Rivet for boiler dutch steamtug www.Dockyardv.nl

If you know the specifications of the steel used, why not make them on a lathe? 30 pieces isn't that big a job. Soft steels can be troublesome to get a good finish but it is quite doable. If you are concerned about subsurface flaws, magnetic testing isn't that expensive and should satisfy any ration...

Re: How to Prepare Steamboat for Heated Winter Storage

I'd like to chime in with the idea of using a wet or dry vacuum cleaner rather than compressed air. Volume is far more important than pressure in getting water out of pipes and pumps and the like. I store in an unheated place on the same island as Bart. And I'm gone to Baja California (Mexico) for s...
