Re: Antonia Engine - Marshall valve gear

On closer look, I'm not sure this is a marshall geared engine. I don't see the linkages of a marshall valvegear, it looks like the valve motion may ride in a straight slotted link cut into the round bar, in a way similar to a hackworth.

Very fascinating, and a neatly built little engine. Curious about the valvegear though.

Re: Valve Gear Simulation

For many years I have evaluated steam engine valve gears, and have often wondered why the Stephenson Valve Gear Mechanism is so prevalent. Does anyone know why? I've often wondered the same. The Marshal gear has the practical advantages you mentioned: that there are no sliding links or blocks; all ...

Love that Sirius. It's always satisfying to see them used in a way that both takes advanage of their quirks and is useful.

Re: Start of VFT build

What material/source are you considering using for the boiler shell? I have my eye on A106 Sch 40 pipe right now but that stuff is rare to come by in the small quantifies needed for our launches.

Anyone planning on attending the Oklahoma Steam Threshing and Gas Engine Association show in May?

Not a steamboat meet, but it's a huge gathering of steam (and antique gas) engine enthusiasts and the general public. In the last show there was a pretty large display of odd homebuilt steam launch engines, and you can usually find someone interesting to chat up about the hobby. http://www.oklahomat...

I love these back-acting designs. Such clever arrangements to be as compact as possible
