Re: Viability of brazing a tubesheet?

Coal? What are coal? The coal I can get there in the N.W. United Sates is so bad. You get more clinkers back than you put coal in. Add to that the mess and stink and I'll pass. Good to know about the sulphur issue. That's not just limited to the NWUS, there are still a few mines here in Oklahoma, b...

Re: Deception?

They certainly aren't a perfect solution, but they have their advantages. Plus the ability to switch regions is a huge bonus for buying plane tickets/streaming video.

If you're really worried about being tracked, get a VPN. They're not expensive and they're a good way to browse anonymously.

Re: Flying a (steaming) kite

Just been doing a little more playing about with the SBA Steamboat register extract. This gives us some idea of the technology adopted by boat owners in the size category about which this thread has been discussing. Interesting to see that some quite small boats have gone for compounds and that the...

Viability of brazing a tubesheet?

Obviously it would be poorly suited to high pressure service, but for lower pressure (~100PSI), would a rolled and brazed boiler be viable? Given the relatively lower temperature of brazing compared to welding, it seems like it may be a good way to seal rolled tubes/prevent hot spots without affecti...

Re: 2.5mm Oil/Kerosene Nozzles

A ball valve for a quick fuel shutoff is imperative. It only takes a few seconds of flameout to have an explosive mixture in the firebox that can wreak havock on the boiler casing (water tube boilers like the mishap on Jim Webster's "Souvenir") or blow the firebox door open and shoot the spark arre...

Re: Old video on a Steam Tug

Given the relatively short ranges of these supercavitating torpedoes, I would not be surprised if they are intended only for defensive use at close range, in which case you've probably already been discovered so stealth isn't important. Sort of the same philosophy as submarine launched antiaircraft ...

Re: Old video on a Steam Tug

Above a certain speed and above a certain depth, a torpedo hits a limit of usability due to cavitation noise. Not just the prop but the torpedo itself moving through the water. Say we are thinking about firing at a surface ship. Even if we have the shot stay deep until relatively late in the run, t...

I'm also going to have to recommend LibreCAD for Linux. It's been a few years since I've used it, but I remember it being pretty good for what it was.

Re: Oh! No! BSOD!

Fred- If your machine shop is anything like my employer, they're probably going to ask for a STEP or IGES file from you. Your best option would probably be to download the free edition of Autodesk Fusion360. This will let you create the components you need and export them as one of the filetypes men...
