Re: Monotube Javelin
"Quick question about your steam separator; Is it considered part of your boiler pressure vessel or considered 'plumbing'?" The separator vessel (6 inch diameter pipe, about 20 inches long, is considered an integral part of the boiler proper, and thus must NOT have any valve between the fired monotu...

Re: Towards Building a Steam Powered Outboard Motor
The crankcase for the uniflow engine is from a Wisconsin AEN gasoline engine. This engine is somewhat unusual because the air cooled cylinder is detachable from the crankcase. Yes, the flywheel is from the original engine, I will machine off the blower fins when I get a round tuit.

Re: Monotube Javelin
Working as a Professional Engineer for over 50 years in the steam power industry, I have never seen a diagram produced professionally that did NOT have the safety valve shown, if there was one in the system. "just wondering why safety valves are so seldom shown in diagrams in the model monotube worl...

Re: Towards Building a Steam Powered Outboard Motor
From Barts: "A uniflow engine is attractive from an efficiency standpoint, but needs good vacuum if the clearance is to be kept low - and any clearance directly affects efficiency. This would make starting such an engine, especially on an outboard, tricky." Barts statement is all true, however it gi...

Re: Monotube Javelin
The ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) publishes the basic code book for boiler design and construction. Virtually all boilers as well as pressure vessels are governed by the rules here, and most USA States, as well as the majority of countries follow these rules. While many steamboats ...

Re: Mono-tube boiler website
Flushing the separator thru the inlet steam connection I only did once, just after welding it together. The bottom drain, where water exits to the letdown line and trap line is easy to flush in the boat, in the fall I flush out the monotube coil and separator with RV antifreeze. In the spring I flus...

Re: Mono-tube boiler website
INSIDE THE MONOTUBE COIL, ABOUT 4 TO 8 POUNDS OF WATER, PLUS ABOUT 0.02-0.025 POUNDS OF STEAM INSIDE THE SEPARATOR, ABOUT 0.5 - 0.9 POUNDS OF WATER, PLUS ABOUT 0.10 POUNDS OF STEAM Cleaning the inside of the separator, there is a bottom sump with a ball valve drain. Rust that is small enough to get ...

Re: Mono-tube boiler website
Monotube Javelin, first trials. Boat makes 7 MPH with the 350cc engine, holding 150 PSI steam pressure with oil burner continuously firing. If steam to engine is throttled, steam pressure immediately rises, with a pressure switch shutoff of feedwater pump and burner. Then pressure drops to about 125...
