Re: Lagging....

Hi Bart,

When I was working on one of the Stanleys for 'that collector' we did a smoke hood simply using 1/4" fiberfrax mat, fiberglass weave cloth, and latex paint to wet the cloth. The insulation was good enough to keep from affecting the paint, even with the hellacious heat the smoke hood saw.

Re: Monotube Javelin

Thank you again Fred for the explanation. My thoughts were a separator completely outside of the casing and pressure vessel. Made strictly of threaded fittings with zero welding if possible. Something like this, albeit much more complex (see attached)

Re: New member

Welcome to the forum.. I'm glad that boat is getting a new lease on life. I don't recall if I ever saw that boat at the Delta steamboat meet. I'll have to look back in the archives. What part of California did it come from?

Re: digital steam engine indicator

Feel like making an indicator for an engine with a 48" stroke? Already have the pantographs to convert it to a 4" stroke

Re: Monotube Javelin

Fred, thank you for the explanation regarding the steam separator and where it falls in the ASME code. I suppose making one out of schedule 80 nipples, caps, bell reducers, Tees, etc might disqualify it from adhering to 'code'?

Re: Monotube Javelin

Fred,
Quick question about your steam separator;
Is it considered part of your boiler pressure vessel or considered 'plumbing'?

Re: Mono-tube boiler website

Mine doesn't have a steam separator. There is a de-superheater coil that adds feed water to keep the steam temp within a reasonable amount of superheat. Bart, could you elaborate on what your meant in your earlier post? Do you have any photos of your engine? There are lots of folks on here who can s...

Re: Mono-tube boiler website

Elver, The separator would be at the same pressure as operating pressure of the boiler, with the associated saturated steam temperature. It could potentially act as a condenser if not adequately insulated. Any potential condensation would be expelled with the occasional emptying of the separator, or...

Re: How to Prepare Steamboat for Heated Winter Storage

Even in California we have places that lose power in the depths of winter and see temps in the -20°F (yes farenheight... That's like -10,000°C or so, right?). We plumbed our boats with draining in mind and put drain valves in the low spots where possible. Draining the entire system is a year-end rig...
