Re: Starting up for the day

I like it. Firing up on wood is an experience that deserves a good literary treatment.

Re: Colin chandlers 14ft yachting world day boat conversion to steam

It looks great so far, Colin. You've chosen such a lovely looking hull - I'm sure she'll be a very elegant boat. You are inspiring me to get off my tail with my own project. Thanks for sharing your project with us!

Cheers,
Scott

Re: Desuperheater question

Thanks for the input, Fred. I think the conclusion, then, is that I'm likely just going to burn up an oversized superheater. This boat is supposed to be a relaxed cruising boat, so I don't want to set it up such that it needs constant fiddling just to not self-destruct. I think it makes sense just t...

Re: Desuperheater question

Thanks for the input. The reason I was thinking about a superheater rather than a feed water heater in the firebox is for efficiency's sake - I wanted to preserve the counter-flow heat exchange of having the hottest heat transfer surface (the superheater element) next to the fire, followed by the ge...

Desuperheater question

I am putting together a wood-fired ofeldt boiler, using a round firebox with castable refractory lining I already have. The only downside to this firebox in its last incarnation was that the refractory stored a LOT of heat. This was very noticeable even with the 18" diameter firebox under a pressure...

Re: Favourite cylinder lubrication

Long story short, it works great!... if you can find something to suspend it in that won't evaporate too quickly Well, there goes my graphite-dissolved-in-acetone plan! In seriousness, than you for the feedback on the graphite. Based on your description, I think I will definitely give it a try. It ...

Re: Favourite cylinder lubrication

If I may circle back to the first post in the thread... what prompts the decision to start using oil instead of graphite? I was considering doing just the opposite switch as I convert to a condensing system. How did you introduce the graphite, and why was it not satisfactory? Thanks in advance, Scott

Re: Jay R. Benford 25ft Fantail Launch

I've never sailed one, but I believe I do have sketches with small scale lines for his 34' and 38' fantails. They were published in a book of his designs that I purchased 20 years ago in Vancouver. I could scan and email that if anyone needs. They certainly looked like lovely little boats. Cheers, S...

Re: Steam Thruster?

I second the trolling motor idea. You can still use steam for the battery charging, and so be a 100% steam powered vessel (after all, the Normandie had a steam electric propulsion system, so you are in very good historical company there). My thought is that even on a small boat, if a thruster is to ...

Re: Seeking Advice on Milling Machine

Mike, thanks for the reminder to check the thread form. 1/4-20 threaded rod felt right threading into the machine, but I don't know if whitworth might also fit. I'll double check. I have most of the original gib screws, so I should be able to be sure fairly easily.

Thanks!
