Re: Nyitra I
It sounds like you are getting the bugs sorted out. Next time it'll probably be you giving the broken infernal combustion boat a tow (which is always a VERY satisfying experience). One striking thing I noticed in your narrative is "plenty of steam". Many, if not most, of our plants, have engines tha...

Re: Newbie now has hull for "just an engine"
Beautiful little hull you have found. I'm sure that a 5A will push it around reasonably well. You won't pull any water skiers, but presumably that wasn't on the agenda anyway. You might want to take a look at a couple of articles in "Steamboats and Modern Steam Launches" (re-print to be had from Ell...

Re: Sea Lion Engine build
You might want to think twice about 212 degree exhaust steam as a cylinder jacket as opposed to 300+ for boiler pressure steam- it will likely do more harm than good. Have a look at Prof. Stumpf's book (available free on google books) - it gives a very thorough thermodynamic overview of what's going...

Re: Hadden Uniflow casting set for sale
Well, Ron, I've put in a bid on your castings. It looks like a really neat little engine.

Re: Prop re-pitching
The video is fantastic - that lets me know that what I want to do is at least technically feasible. My thought was to heat the prop just the way the gentleman in the video does it, but to have the hub and blade held firmly in a jig that would control the amount of twist fairly precisely. My prop is ...

Re: My New Launch
I call or email the good folks at Myers every couple of years as well, in hopes of convincing them do do another run of castings. Are there many more people out there who are hoping for a set of those castings? Perhaps if we could put together a firm order for several sets, it might inspire them to ...

Prop re-pitching
Has anybody on the list successfully re-pitched his or her own prop? I have an 18x23 motor boat prop (bronze) with lots of blade area. Currently I have the engine geared up to spin it about 1.3x engine speed, but would much rather have more pitch at lower rpm, especially since I have all that blade ...

Re: Operating pressure
Easy diagnostic test for your injector: put a piece of hose on the overflow and stick the hose end in a bucket of water when you try the injector. There should be no bubbles. If you see bubbles, you are getting air in the suction side, and these injectors will not run with even a tiny air leak. It s...

Re: Hand pump for boiler feedwater
From memory, I think it's around 1.5" bore (it's out of state in winter storage at the moment). The handle is cast aluminium, and long enough to provide leverage for pretty intensive usage at 80 or 100 PSI. It's supposed to be good for 500. That seems a bit much, but I can testify to 250 being no pr...

Re: Hand pump for boiler feedwater
http://www.neptunepump.com/pt-pump.html This is the pump you want. It is very similar (maybe identical?) to what Beckman sells. Mine cost $300 (for the bronze version) from Neptune about 8 years ago. It's a big pump, both in dimensions and capacity, and it works beautifully. I have steamed my 3x4 si...
