A creative grate design.
I had not thought about using the ash to insulate the steel grate bars.
Thanks for sharing the idea.

Re: Steam Thistle Cluaran
Pete: The new prop is not plated with anything. Just carefully polished after shaping. I worked my way through 7 different grits of sanding pads using a 3" diameter sponge disc with velcro to the pads, turned by my battery powered 90 degree drill motor. Many recharged batteries later, the final grit...

Re: Steam Thistle Cluaran
After many working hours over the past month, I finally finished the new rough sand-cast bronze 16" diameter x 24 pitch steamboat propeller, sold to me by Pat Spurlock of Elliott Bay Steam Launch Co, in Portland, Oregon, USA! It's now a Tylenol afternoon for my shoulders. Pics attached (of the prop,...

Re: Wooden Boat Show Eve
Thanks for those pictures. And good to see your Launch and the interested people viewing it.
Meeting Jeff Rutherford was special! Canard remains my favorite steam ship.
I watched her restoration (on the internet) with great interest.

Re: new boat launch-propeller question
Kelly A: Thank you for posting your info on making the 2-blade prop for "Reciproca." This answers many questions I had. I will report eventually on the 3-blade cast bronze prop I am finishing for my 17 foot launch "Cluaran." In the polishing stages now. A picture of the unfinished cast prop appears ...

Re: new boat launch-propeller question
Here is a YouTube video of Steam Launch "Reciproca." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDv_J1RXTB4 Note the home made 2-blade prop and how it propels that 20 ft. long(?) launch at 6+ knots with just 2 horse power. The prop is easily visible at the beginning of this video. I have not found a descriptio...

Re: new boat launch-propeller question
Nice work on your Assassin! Congrats on getting it onto the water. My instant thought is that your prop has insufficient pitch. It is difficult to "over prop" a steam engine, and I think a higher pitch will get you improved performance. Sources? Not sure for the smaller props. Making your own prop a...

Re: Preparing for the Steaming Season
Bart makes a logical suggestion. Looking at the technical development history of all things steam, improvements were constantly being made to improve operation and lower costs. So I see nothing wrong continuing that practice. Today's LocTite products are perfect for our endeavors. "Rivet counters" m...
