Re: Alphington Steam launch

Pressing work matters kept me busy for the last few weeks but I am back onto my launch build again. The Transom is curved 100mm across 1000mm and I laminated it out of 3 layers of 1/4 ply on a bench jig, that was reasonably easy. Now that the planking is finished I wanted to laminate one more layer ...

Re: Requesting Retrofit CNC advice

CB, If you intend to machine engine components you would be far better off to look for a small older CNC milling machine than to go down the road of retrofitting a manual machine. USD$5K will get you an older machine with a 20 tool magazine and auto tool changer and X 600mm x Y400mm and Z400mm. You ...

Re: More progress

Ron, Sounds like one of those "hit the button and run like hell Fortunately for me the NTX has extremely good collision avoidance, so long as you load the correct 3D models for the tools and correctly enter the stock sizes or 3D stock models. The turret can machine a part in the left hand turning sp...

Re: More progress

Who makes that control? The control is Fanuc 31i-B5 but with DMG MORI Celios interface and DMG MORI Technology Cycles and conversational programming. The Machine is NTX1000SZ 10 axis. The machine is basically 2 lathes and a 5 axis milling machine in one cabinet. 10 tools left and right on the turni...

Re: More progress

Our new Machining center has some spooky vibration control software. The machine detects and measures harmonics in the cutting cycle and automatically varies the RPMs and feeds in order to avoid harmonics. The system is self teaching. If you find that a part starts to chatters you simply turn on the...

Re: More progress

Castings are naturally annealed when cooled slowly and typically have very little internal stress, unlike a weldment. While it is true that a casting would be highly unlikely to have the levels of stress that are seen in a weldment, most castings will have some amount of stress, and some will have ...

Re: More progress

It is a bit difficult to see just how you are clamping the base casting to your table but it looks like you are clamping in 4 places. It is always a good idea to pack up the casting in just 3 places. i.e. in a triangle, and then to clamp directly over the top of the three packers, this way you are l...

Re: I need to put a ring on it.

The pipe with rings is then placed into the furnace for a few hours, then allowed to cool slowly. This relaxes the spring-ring feature almost entirely. What temperature do you have in your furnace? I would think that another option for IC rings may be to machine the internal diameter larger to redu...
