Re: digital steam engine indicator

I know it looks very basic, but there's hundreds of lines of code behind it and I only learned python for this steam engine indicator project, which was a challenge on itself. But I hope you still like where this is going. I think it looks great. For my purposes, I am usually way too busy onboard m...

Re: What water speed do you work with in monotube boilers?

I think the terms like "Bubble of Froth" are mostly trying to offer a simple explanation of what can be a very dynamic process. It also doesn't help that normally we can't even see inside a boiler. The following videos show bubbles and froth in a boiler in different conditions for firetube boilers. ...

Steamboat scale models by Bob Kirtley (with Flash Steam boilers)

Some have asked about the racing of small scaled down steam plants. Below are the youtube links for a 3 part video on flash steam boiler base steamboats, small enough to pick up. The video of the model steamboats was shot in 1995. Some of these models are somewhat manual steam plants, the video show...

Re: TWIN 32 x 38 mm - steam engine for small boats or canoes

Hello, as so often the story begins with "once upon a time ..." There was a second cylinder block when i got my steam lorry MARTIN because there was a water hammer on the steam engine so that the cross head guide and the piston rod were destroyed. The more you try to button up a steam engine the mo...

Re: Large Steam Whistle

... in the winter when the air was cold that the whistle could be heard in Whitefield, some 23 miles away. It's interesting how the sound carries, and how weather can affect it. I think that deeper sounds generally go further. A few times I have whistled back and forth across lake Chautauqua with t...

Re: Engine ready

Chunks abound.. Is it a good coal to burn? Bituminous is pretty easy to use in a wood burning steamboat without modification. Anthracite may require a different grate or pellet hopper. Those chunks look nice sizes for many fireboxes. One of my first steamboat experiences was on the Juneau Steamboat...

Re: Monotube Javelin

"...........about very large and complicated nuclear reactors." That is where I spent most of my engineering work from the late 1960s till a few years ago, I guess some of it rubbed off. I have asked others jokingly that I just need a plutonium insert for my boiler. I have learned that what I want ...

Re: Engine ready

I'm kinda worried about the roller crosshead, I've had issues with reversing direction rollers prematurely wearing, but that was under different uses, and ran 16 hours a day 7days a week, and usually lasted about six months before bearing failure... so the limited use this will see it should be a n...
