This is an excellent set of photos by KiwiNoel showing the construction of a 3 drum Yarrow type boiler

Re: Olfelt

Fred's absolutely right, the welder can only do what the designs specify. I think the issues around welding are one of the reasons for the popularity of water tube boilers, i.e. they can be constructed without the need for welding. Obviously there are other considerations, but it certainly removes o...

Re: Olfelt

"...about 90+% of VFT boiler tubes are just expanded in, with no welding..." That's what I thought. Certainly on my water-tube boiler the tubes are just expanded, no rolling over, and an expander isn't that dear, though it's all relative. In the UK and EU the regulations appear to be stricter than s...

Re: Olfelt

Why is it most VFT boiler tubes are welded in and not just expanded?
It would make replacement much easier.

Re: Ron Fossum?

I too tried to subscribe to his magazine and then to email and message via this forum, but no joy with any of it.
Hope he's OK. Reading his posts on here is quite inspirational.

Re: Boiler costs ?

If you're looking at a 2 year project, then you could spread the costs over that period. Decide on your design. There is much conflicting advice with pros and cons for each. As you intend a relatively small boat then weight and centre of gravity is an issue so keep an eye on that. The pressure vesse...

Re: Initial costings ?

Your problem is finding them. The SBA classifieds and ebay are the best bets. Preston Services sell 2nd hand steam stuff http://prestonservices.co.uk/category/steam-engines/marine-engines/ This'll give you some idea Generally good small singles start at about £1,500 and compounds at £2,500, though t...

Re: Good afternoon from the River Tamar

It'd be interesting to hear about the other boats you've built. What construction methods have you've used?

Re: Good afternoon from the River Tamar

Welcome aboard. Have a good look through the SBA register (the older one is easier to search) and Rainer's one and the American ones too. That will give you a good idea of what works with what. http://www.steamboatassociation.org.uk/page-1117882 http://www.steamboating.de/steamboat/steamboat-registe...
