Re: Hello and a few questions!
Suggestions about the SBA are good ones - they helped me a great deal, lots of experience, proven designs etc. But don't be dissuaded, this is achievable stuff and managed to maintain my sanity as I migrated from work to retirement. But it's not quick, it has taken me 8 years to build hull, boiler a...

Re: How High can Boiler Output be Forced?
As a BTW I have a copy of the old MAP book "Flash Steam for Hydroplanes" and they were certainly running into valve-gear issues with valves running "red hot" due to the temperature of the supplied steam!!! Impressive bits of kit. ..I think all in this book were being fired by Paraffin burners....

Re: A new hotwell for Rainbow
What a neat solution. ...I think this might well find its way into Befur
BTW I have had success welding stainless by arc welding with stainless rods. ..you get a mirror finish, but beware of the flux as it removes itself from the job quite violently as the job cools!

SY-Befer Passes Boiler Test
Yesterday we reached a milestone with Befur's boiler passing its initial test and the engine and ancillaries running on steam for the first time!

A question: s/t fitting 222/3 - what is it?
On the drawings for the Leak compound reheater it suggests the nipples which take the live (reheating) steam should be tapped 5/16 x 26 "to suit s/t fitting 222/3" - I have no idea what this part is. Stuart Turner?
Does anyone know?

Re: Three Drum Boilers
Just browsing around, and I should thank Kiwi Noel who's pictures provided the confidence we needed to set to on a set of three of these. ...and yes drilling the 1400-odd 12.1mm holes did take a while https://sybefur.files.wordpress.com/2017/01/20170124_163607.jpg?w=625&h=469 We also made a chain-dr...

Re: Loo Solutions
We have purchased an AirHead composting loo . This avoids all the chemicals and hull fittings, and while the boat is still awaiting it's machinery I used the Loo in the workshop for a year, and it didn't smell only needed emptying once and produced "plausible" compost that just got dumped on the ope...

Re: Freshwater antifouling
Marineware persuaded me that they could not recommend any underwater paint solution, so I have opted for some International Paints antifouling. We are currently finalising the painting of Befur ready to drag her the 300+ miles to Cumbria, then we just have to build some boilers and install the plant...

Freshwater antifouling
A question for the UK lake district boaters. ...what sort of antifoul do you recommend or are permitted to use? I understand that normal marine antifouling may be banned...
