That's just a baby Ron, only 8" Boxford, but a little cracker!
You still have to watch out for the chips though.

Re: And Now for the Twin
Not much explanation needed here, except perhaps to say the delay was enforced domesticity again. Just removing metal as quickly and safely as possible. Eccentrics (12) (600 x 450).jpg The step at the back is 2mm thick, and will be back to back with it's pair. There will be a similar step on the out...

Re: Plain Bearing materials
I've always found with sintered bushes it's best to stick with stock sizes, It does machine, but not too well, though it does ream Ok as long as the reamer is sharp. Always soak in oil overnight before fitting. I've been reading around and found that PEEK is very similar to Iglidur in a lot of respe...

Plain Bearing materials
Due to local domesticity I've been forced out of the w/shop, so work on the Twin is all but static. However I did find time to peruse the original drawings and noted that the material specified for the valve quadrant end bushes is something I hadn't come across before, "Iglidur", basically it's a se...

Re: Wooding up at Night
I stand to be corrected but I was under the impression that it was usual to moor river boats with the bow facing upstream, even when travelling downstream, as it allowed bow control into the bank/jetty (no bow thrusters back then). Next question, is that something I picked up reading that very famou...

Re: Steam engine from the North Caucasus
Very good work as usual. You had me puzzled for a minute boring an offset diameter in the three jaw chuck. Then I realized one jaw was skipped a tooth out on the scroll, very clever. Ron As a side note, these can be successfully made from bronze shaft. My steam car has them and they have serviced v...

Eccentrics (5) (600 x 450).jpg I don't know how many of you will still be using one of these. I do, and love it. It is so versatile. Set up, switch on and leave it whilst getting on with something else, in this case on the lathe. When the note changes, just add a cut, change the direction, and retu...

Re: And Now for the Twin
I have not been idle! (Well not very anyway). Eccentrics (1) (600 x 450).jpg The bearings arrived nearly a week earlier than expected. So where to start, sheaves or straps? I seem to have material for both, so it really doesn't matter. Straps it is then. Eccentrics (2) (600 x 450).jpg 10mm M.S. plat...

Just hope I can get the v/gear right so it runs as well!Steam Captain wrote: ↑Fri Mar 12, 2021 9:47 amWell, literally everything on this forum is encouraging and inspirational, it's a delight. It reminds me of building my second lathe after moving to the Wadden Sea.
Your engine will be amazing to look at, that's already a safe bet.
