Fabric Canopy Fringe - Where to Get It??

I'm interested in adding a scalloped fabric fringe to the outside edge of the canopy on Black Eagle. Where would I find something like that? Would I have to make it from scratch??

Re: Lightning Vulnerability for Steamboats.

I'd expect a drunken fool going full tilt in a speedboat would be a much greater worry than a lightning strike. It seems the conventional wisdom on lightning strikes on smaller vessels is that on the rare occasions it occurs, the electrical discharge hits the highest metal and then runs in a cone s...

Re: Lightning Vulnerability for Steamboats.

As the OP and a newbie, my steamboat is docked at a boat access only camp in the Adirondacks of upstate NY. The marina where we park our car is 5 miles away from our camp. As a result, I have needed to steam the 5 miles many times with what currently seems to be the ever present forecast of scattere...

Lightning Vulnerability for Steamboats.

Probably over-analyzing a vulnerability but I steam mostly in the summer in thunderstorm country. Seems like steamboats present a lightning rod type situation with a high metal stack connected to a metal boiler attached to the hull either close to or below the waterline. Questions: Is there any hist...

Re: Hand Hole Gaskets - Major Headache!! I Need Help!

Well,,,,,,,, I DID IT!!! After an hour of awkward positions with my arms at angles they aren't supposed to work, I was able to get the two bottom hand hole covers with new gaskets in place. I torqued them much more than the TOPOG recommended 1/4 turn past finger tight and they now don't leak. Next s...

Re: Hand Hole Gaskets - Major Headache!! I Need Help!

I use gaskets from http://www.mcmaster.com, #1923K22, which I believe are the same ones you and Mike have been talking about. The first year of operation, I had problems due to the inside surface of the boiler shell having damage on the gasket seating surface, and also due to the clamping bridge ha...

Re: Hand Hole Gaskets - Major Headache!! I Need Help!

I am puzzled by the amount of leakage you describe after inserting the covers and tightening them.If you have water leakage that will not allow raising the level to the upper handholes something is definitely wrong. It sounds like what I get when the cover is crossed even a little bit. If the inner...

Re: Hand Hole Gaskets - Major Headache!! I Need Help!

If the gaskets you are using have raised lettering on them you have the right ones. Be sure the covers are properly seated with as even a margin of black gasket showing as possible. Put a couple of drops of valve oil on the threads of the cover, makes tightening and later looseniing much easier. Ne...

Hand Hole Gaskets - Major Headache!! I Need Help!

New to steam boating as of last year's purchase of Black Eagle. During my first winterization last fall, I removed the 2 lower hand and one upper hole covers to clean out and dry the bottom of my boiler. Finally replaced all the accessories I took off for warm weather winter storage and had a major ...

Option to dress up my stack

I've got a 20 year old boiler with the original black iron dome and stack. What are the options to improve the appearance? Are brass stacks available or practical? What do others do to improve their stack appearance? http://s949.photobucket.com/user/bsrchas/media/Steam/Black%20Eagle%20Compressed.jpg...
