Re: Herreshoff Triple Expansion launch build

Don, You are confusing two different boats. Chris is building his replica. Vapor is an original Herreshoff Boat being restored. Chris copied the pumps etc from Vapor for his build, ad they were the only bits on the vessel not made by Herreshoff, and so no drawings existed. Daniel Yes I have been in ...

Re: Prop shaft diameter - Stuart 5a

I would have thought 7/8 would be easily enough. I have an inch shaft swinging a 23 inch prop, so 7/8 would be quite sufficent. The standard rule for bearing spacings is: Bearings spaced no closer than 20 times the shaft diameter, and no further apart than 40 times the shaft diameter.

Auckland Steam Engine Society Warkworth steamboat event

Two weeks ago we had our Steam event at Warkworth, on the Mahurangi River. Due to various boats being apart for rebuilds we were a bit short of boats this year, having only four attending, three working each day. Paul Gilbert very kindly took pictures of the boats and they can be seen at: https://ww...

Re: 230ft Steam yacht for sale

Does anyone know what this vessel actually is? I've not seen or heard of it before.

Glands- Any improvements?

Has anyone come across an improvement on the traditional gland packing arrangement for piston rod and valve spindles? On prop shafts etc we now have modern lips seals etc that work very well, but of course they are rotational, rather than a sliding shaft. Has anyone come across something that will w...

Re: Boiler stack performance vs. relative humidity & dew poi

Lack of wind over the funnel will definitely have an effect on draft, but I can't see it being so very different from one day to the next. The vessels of old all had decent funnel height, to encourage the natural draft to their fires. Your funnel at best resembles that of an early internal combustio...

Re: Steam consumption of Simpson Strickland Quad

That is correct Fred, although Simpson Strickland did state that they were very happy running quads at 175psi, and their compounds were designed for 140psi. However they did consider the pressure difference from 175 to 250 made quite a difference, in the case of this engine 6ihp.

Re: Steam consumption of Simpson Strickland Quad

Interesting figures there, which explain why that vessel is always crawling around. These engines were rated for 20IHP at 250psi, or 14IHP at 175psi. They will certainly not like much less than 175psi, otherwise there will be no steam left by the time it reaches the last cylinder. Daniel http://www....

Re: Steam consumption of Simpson Strickland Quad

The quads do have slide valves, but they seem to last ok, despite the pressure. I've felt heavier reversing levers on engines that run on much less pressure than this one. Remember Simpson Strickland built a lot of these engines running at these pressures, so they knew what they were doing.
