"Chuffs Too" SOLD

Post by csonics » Mon Aug 09, 2010 3:24 am

I'm posting this for a friend:

For Sale:

Unique steam boat with wooden hull, water tube boiler, and one of a kind walking beam engine – all built in 2001-03. Includes commercial – built trailer with 12V winch, plus assorted related items. Kept in a garage when not in use.
Hull is 19 ½ ft. x 54” W x 21” deep; of the charpy type. It is deeper that the plans and has less shear. Construction is of Baltic Birch plywood over oak framing, covered with 2 – part paint. Boat draws 8 inches water fully loaded, and about 5 inches empty. Running lights are antique acetylene with a home built generator. A large rudder provides excellent steerage.
Engine is a one of a kind oak framed – walking beam 3x10 cylinder 55% steam cut-off and 45% exhaust re-compression. Typical double seat, balanced, poppet valves with appropriate valve gear. Hand reverse, eccentric forward, Watt parallel motion, direct drive to wheels. (Reference: see paddle wheel steamers by Bob Whittier; Sea Master Inc. Duxbury Mass. 1987)
Boiler is a 20 square foot modified Bolsover Water tube type, home built in 2003. Initial hydro test at 1400 PSI; last 400 PSI hydro-test was spring of 2010. Operating pressure of boiler is 200 PSI. All components up to throttle valve were included in hydro. Feed water heater and steam dryer integral with boiler. Steel drum with copper tubes and bronze fittings. Boiler is not licensed. Hand water feed injector and over sized engine pump with adjustable bypass, provides lake water to boiler. Pull open drain valve allows the 4 ½ gallons of water to drain in a few seconds. Steam aspirated fuel burner and stack blower, used for 50% gasoline – 50% diesel fuel mix. Pre-heat and pilot is L.P. gas.
Boiler case is a cast iron shell from an old demand type gas water heater made by Ruud. Patented in 1904, name plate and user instruction plate still on shell. One single tone and one 4 – tone whistle, sounds great.
Rare original pump feed lubricator with lube sight glass at throttle valve. Open exhaust with cyclone water separator and integral feed water heater directly down line from adjustable engine feed pump. Makes great chuff, chuff, chuff sound. Ball and needle bearings thru-out, 6.2 mph at 60 R.P. M. (hull speed) 6.7 mph at 90 R.P.M. Optimum speed 60 R.P.M.
Can be seen operating at upper Mississippi Rivers Steamboat Meet Sept 16-18, 2010. Chanticleer Inn Eagle River WI. 54521 http://www.chanticleerinn.com

Extra’s included, are tools, parts, cushions, life jackets, boat hook, fire extinguisher, carbide for lights. Cylinder oil, paint, plywood for repairs, extra rudder, etc.
Selling because of my age, cancer and lack of family interest. Minimum bid $10,000.00. Accepted payment Cash, with a non refundable deposit of $1000.00 due at bid acceptance. Balance due at the time boat is received by bidder.

Sold is a partial truth. He actually donated it to a museum. Such a neat boat! I hope it gets used.
