How many gallons should I make my make-up tank in my steamboat?

I have a 2.5" X 3.75" X 2" fore and aft compound running at about 400 rpm. Its a condensing system with feedwater pump. hotwell, etc.

I'll be steaming at about 125 to 135 psi.

Any ideas or suggestions would be a lot of help.

Thanks, Doug B

I have 30 gal available to me which gives me at least 10 hr steaming. On longer voyages I carry a collapsible 5 gal water container[heavy plastic bag really] It's handy for making tea or washing dishes as well! There is an old adage-"what will do more will do less"- and would rather come home with extra water than run out! I run in the ocean but if you plan to run in fresh water you have an unlimited supply just overboard ! Den

Hi Den,

Thanks for the info. I just epoxied my water tight bulkhead into the bow. It's an intergrel tank and holds about 15 gallons. It's vee shaped, 28 inches wide and 22" high at the bulkhead. It's 28 inches long, bulkhead to the bow.

Do I need some baffles in the tank?

I've seen your name on the NWSS bulletin board. Do have a boat here in the Pacific Northwest?

Thanks again for your ideas,
