I'm not sure it matters a great deal where lubricator drive comes from. There needs to be a large "gearing down" before the lubricator itself, so that the lubricator piston swept volume can be above microscopic, and this also ensures the loading at the drive end is very low.

Lubrication of condensing engines isn't really much of a problem: just different compared with puffers. The three main things to do are:
1. Use minimum cylinder oil - some people get away with none.
2. Any cylinder oil should be formulated so as to separate from water easily.
3. Some form of oil absorbing/trapping material (such as nappy liner) should be added to the hotwell.

The only one of these with any impact on engine design is 1, where any mechanical or other lubricator should be adjustable so that it will reliably dispense very small quantities of oil.

The only problem with operating the lubricator from the valve-rod is if you want to run 'notched up'. Reduced valve stroke = reduced lubricator stroke.
