Hello from Montreal

Post by Davis Dry Dock » Tue Jun 18, 2019 1:52 pm

Hi everyone,

Glad to be here and to have the chance to introduce myself. I've been lurking for a while now, but I'm hoping to begin building a boat in the next year so I figured it was time to step forward.
We're lucky in Quebec to have access to many beautiful lakes as well as some lovely canals, so I'm looking forward to taking advantage of those by steam power, one day ;)

So there we go, looking forward to interacting with you!

Welcome, and I'm sure we are all interested in your archive stuff.

IIRC you need to have a few posts under your belt before the site will accept photos and downloads.

Hi Kyle

Welcome to the Board and this merry band of steam nuts.

Do share a little of your background and plans, as well as that wonderful sounding archive. As you may have noticed the folks on the Board range from the real engineers whose advice is as good as gold dust and then the non engineering folk such as the ex-paper pushing dilettantes like myself. After a lifetime pushing paper I have introduced myself to metal work (instruction book in one hand of course) and have gone down the 'Poser' route. There are some photos of where that trail led under the Frances Ann heading. Not engineering porn, but I think she is quite a pretty little boat. Thanks to another board Member her re-fit should soon be finished and we can give you all an update on getting a quart into a pint pot.

Regards

Pete

Thanks for the welcome, guys.

My background is as a historic plaster conservator in and around Montreal. We have many heritage interiors that have survived in both commercial/public buildings and in more modest private homes and I'm one of the lucky people who gets to recreate and restore ornaments and mouldings that might otherwise be stripped out and sent to a landfill.

I've been involved with steam since I was a kid. Now I'm just a little bit bigger, I guess!

Welcome to the forum! I love Montreal, all the beautiful buildings, and history. My mother grew up in St-Bruno-De-Montaville. I spent every summer out there visiting my Grandma and Granddad.
Has the old canal that goes to the waterfront been restored to operation now?

Hey Wesley,

Always nice to hear from people who have French-Canadian roots. Sometimes when I drive through Maine it feels like it MUST have been part of Quebec once, but of course that’s not true. The quantity of French names could make you wonder!

The Lachine Canal is indeed up and running again, and there’s also the Chambly Canal, which connects the Saint Lawrence with the Hudson by way of Lake Champlain. It seems to me like all this would make for an incredible setting for a steamboat meet...

Lots more to come!

Welcome to the forum. Those few photos are absolute gems, and I really can't wait to see more of what you have. The beauty of old photographs is they were always taken very carefully, so reproduce well and show astounding detail that is often hard to see in modern photos of similar subjects. I look forward to seeing much much more as you are able to provide it.
Thanks,
Daniel

Hi Kyle,

Welcome here! There is a maritime museum run by a steamboat enthusiast in your area. I am sure he would be extremely interested. I would be happy to make an introduction.

Best wishes,

D.
