Welcome to the forum.

The RMS Segwun is one of my favorite ships of all time. I very much enjoyed riding on her and visiting her engine room as a child and young adult.

Tell me, is the Wanda III still in operation?

Welcome Brian

Your organisation looks to be doing great things. You may find that this happy bunch tend to work with slightly smaller vessels but will have much in common. We look forward to hearing your views in our varied discussions.

Regards

Pete

Muskoka Power Squadron donated $5000 for the "upgrade" of steam to electric.
Sea trials of the new system are expected late 2022 summer.

Apparently both her boiler and steam engine where no longer satisfactory to Transport Canada.
John Miller, President of Muskoka Steamships and Discovery Centre speaking about the restoration:

They shouldn't be able to call her a "Steam Yacht" anymore. It may make business sense, but it just seems like they kind of missed the point...

The triple expansion engine was an admiralty engine designed for minesweepers. I'm sure it's more than adequate... Especially if the twin compounds in the Segwun are still considered adequate...

They screwed up years ago when they replaced the original watertube (I think it was a mosher or thornycroft style 3-drum) with a package boiler that could barely push it at 8kts. I remember as a kid seeing the steam drum of the old boiler on the ground with all the tubes cut off.

It's just a comedy (tragedy?!) of errors and mismanagement that continues to degrade the uniqueness of the vessel. Shame when entities try to pull this stuff under the guise of 'preservation'. I can make up new definitions to words also 🥴

It's happening at many museums, especially at our beloved Henry Ford museum in Dearborn. For the last 30-40 years they've been liquidating irreplaceable relics and swapping them for floor space, public school classrooms, hot dog stands and politically themed displays. At one time that museum had the best display of steam engines, likely in the world, from Newcomen right up to the 20th century, in chronological order. Interjecting the leaderships' obvious political persuasions in the new ''exhibits''. I for one care nothing about anything political, especially recent social issues when examining relics of an otherwise world class museum. Now get off my lawn!! :D
