Re: Colin chandlers 14ft yachting world day boat conversion to steam
I've done some research and discovered that my boat was built in 1963 a year before I was born
It was constructed by LH walker in Leigh on sea , that's 5 minutes up the road from Southend on sea were I live ! Mr walker was a very well known boat builder, I hope he's not too pissed off with what I'm doing with his boat after all it's going back in the water instead of being broken up, it has been left laying on its port side at sometime in its life and that's caused it to rot away, but fear not I'm going to save it and use it again, it's 56 years old so I might get a vintage boat discount when buying a day licence for the canals! Every cloud lol

Very few steamboats use reduction gearing, stay with direct drive. Also, the larger the propeller, the greater the opportunity for better propulsion efficiency, so stay with the biggest prop that has adequate clearance from the hull. My last prop boat (14 feet long) had a 14 x 17 prop at 400 RPM, and that was about only 3/4 horsepower. A 15 inch prop with the 5A will be about right, perhaps you will need to experiment with changing the pitch, but do that later, get steaming underway now.
The FAQ section of this forum will provide rough mathematical information on all this technical propulsion/engine/boiler/hull speed/required power issues.

Tops are off and now it's time to remove the framework and make some more space for seats inside

Wooden boat restorations amaze me. If I were presented with a hull in that condition I would probably let out a shriek and scratch my eyes out.
Sometime I think that you guys could build a boat out of chop sticks.
