Brother John from Scotland asked about the stern tube ... Here's the view of the box keel from aft. (The box keel is a seventy year-old concept that provides strength to the hull and should help provide flotation and mitigate squat.) Boring the stern tube hole is counterintuitive. One spends over a year crafting a hull only to bore a massive hole in it. "X" does not mark the spot - I placed my pilot hole where Mr. Parker designed it ...

The dastardly deed is done: The photo is not quite in-line ... It looks like an owl's nest. From the photo, one doesn't get a sense of the depth of the hole and how the keel planking flanks the stern tube ...

After the hole is finished, a stern tube "surrogate" needs to be installed in order to finish and cover the hull. The surrogate is coated with a release agent to insure it will not be a permanent fixture. Much later, after interior structure is in place, the actual tube will be installed. Both are from the same length of tube. Here's the surrogate in place ...

And here's the surrogate tube after initial fairing but before before final coating and covering. You can see I don't quite trust the release agent so the tube is also wrapped in wax paper. Even with all of that, I had to whack the tube out with a mallet in order to finish dressing things. Epoxy is a fearsome thing ...

By the way, the stern tube is 2" ID. This is a popular OD size for a great variety of cutlass bearing diameters since I haven't settled on a shaft diameter yet.

More anon ...

Rainer, after perusing your posts and links, it is I who should be following your methods carefully. Thanks for the encouragement!

Nobody is as perfect as all together - for me this is not a socialistic slogan but the truce of life. Every word you read and any picture you see will stimulate your brain for new thoughts.

Why you don't laminated the stern tube direct into the keel planking. I plan to glue it in while building the keel planking. I am much to lazzy to drill this hole...

Please read this as a question not as nagging!
Mailing is a perfect way to misunderstand people and ruine frendships for lifetime especially when you do it in a foreign language like me ;.)

"Why you don't laminated the stern tube direct into the keel planking."

Good question. Clearly, this would have represented the better way for a purpose-built design. At the time of design and framing out the hull, there were many things that were unclear - which engine, floor structure, etcetera. Some of these things are still unclear. So it seemed best for me to shoot a shaft line, bore the "owl's nest," install the surrogate and laminate the actual tube in at a later date. I have much greater faith in my ability to work with epoxy than designing too far out in the future. Epoxy, like love, covers over a great many sins ...

Don't worry about your English. My German would be much, much worse.
