Thanks for posting this book, what a great read! Interesting to get a look at Indian and settler relations in the upper mid-west USA from an author in the late 19th century. Very different from the present presentations that cast a different light on this subject.
My steamer, the Margaret S. is named after my aunt, born 1903 in Rosebud, South Dakota. Her father (my grandfather), was the US Government Indian Agent there, managing The distribution of annuities for the Native Tribes. He was also a photographer, and we have some of his photographs from those times.
I remember in the 1960s, my mother had a whole large chest of the glass plate photographs he had made, almost all of Indians at the reservation. She threw them all away, hundreds of them. A fortune thrown away.
