On the Delaware River
Sidewheeler Margaret S. steamed out on the Delaware River at Philadelphia on 21 October 2011. We were welcomed at the Independence Seaport Museum, which has several historic boats and ships docked there. Several of the boat restoration workshop crew went out with us for a short voyage around the piers, the heaviest yet for the Margaret S., at about 1.15 long tons displacement . After lunch and a tour of the Museum we filled the water tanks (Delaware river is brackish at Philadelphia) and steamed south with 15-20 knot winds, and big (for the little steamer) waves on the river. Slow going with the waves and wind, but a good outing overall.

Re: Onthe Delaware River
Historic Ships at Philadelphia. The SS United States, still holds the record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic of a large passenger liner. The ship hopefully awaits restoration, and has been out of service since 1969. With 248,000 horsepower (steam turbines) the 990 foot ship displaces 53,000 tons.
The battleship New Jersey is docked across the river, of WWll vintage, 888 feet long and 45,000 tons, with nine 16 inch guns. We decided to behave, as the little sidewheeler only has a single one inch breech loading cannon.
The Olympia, a US Navy Cruiser from the 1890s, 344 feet long and 6600 tons. This is the only surviving ship from the Spanish-American war of 1898. The ship has two large triple expansion engines, about 11,000 horsepower each.
Beyond the Olympia is the Moshulu, a 1904 vintage 4 mast square rigged sailing ship, at 396 feet overall and 7000 tons displacement, the largest afloat presently. A fine restaurant inside.

Re: On the Delaware River
I remember being invited to a dinner on board the USS George Washington when they took dock on my place for a couple of days. I was supposed to be tagged along by a friend who was a part of one of the radio shows on local. I was really ready for the night but unfortunately, my friend had to bail out on me. It would have been my first time on board some sort of battle ship, and how could have I missed such a great opportunity.
