What books do you recommend for building up a steam library? I've just bought Modern Engines and Power Generators, Audel's Engineering and Mechanics set, and Machinery's Handbook, but if there's anything else you can recommend I'd love to hear it.

I absolutely agree with the above suggestions. I'd also recommend:

General boat mechanisms perspective:
  • David Gerr's Propeller Handbook
  • David Gerr's Boat Mechanical Systems Handbook: How to Design, Install, and Recognize Proper Systems in Boats
  • Skene's Elements of Yacht Design
Industrial steam background:
Boating:
  • Chapman Piloting & Seamanship

There are many books that are beyond copyright, and are available for free on the web. Steam technology of 100 years ago has many engineering books on this subject, have a look around Google.

I have been collecting real books on this subject since the early 1970s, and have several hundred of them, however when I look for them on the web, only a very small fraction are found. None the less, those available on the web can be most helpful.
