Need 1" Double Valve Whistle Poppet Valve

Post by Mfoxchicago » Wed Jul 07, 2021 10:25 pm

Does anyone know where I can locate a poppet valve like the one I am already using on TULE PRINCESS. These are used on her Walking Beam Engine for both INTAKE and EXHAUST. I know they are originally Whistle Valves, but these valves have been in service for over 37 years. One is wearing out and we are on the look out for a new one, or two.

The challenge is the intake and outflow fittings on ours are both 1.5" Male NPT fittings that connect to existing union coupling nuts. Everything I am finding on the internet seem to be female fittings. There is VERY little space for any connection modifications.

Trying to get a lead on who might have been their manufacturer. All that is cast into the body of the valve is a "1" and a direction arrow.

Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Thanks,
Capt. Mack

Perhaps rebuilding the valve might be the best approach... I don't see anything like these.

Hi Bart,

Yep. Rebuilding the valve or the valve seat is what I originally hoped to have my machinist would be able to do for us. He is about the Best in the area. But, he is growing more and more frustrated in not being able to get a good seal between the valve & its seat and balanced with the second valve and its seat. He is advising me to begin the search for a new one that might be more cost effective compared to what I may end up paying to have him rework this valves issues. It may have reached the end of its service life.

If you come across any images or leads like the one I have, do give me a shout.

Thanks again Bart for you response though.

That's an odd valve. Looks to be a large metering valve for pneumatic service possibly. Fine threads on the stem. The special unions would be considered tailpieces.

As many boxes of old valves i've pilfered and surfing ebay, I've never seen a valve like that one.

Ok Guys, I did some deeper digging in "The Bible"- Captain's Logbook from the original owner and previous Captains. I am Captain #3.

What David Sarlin (Designer, Builder & 1st Captain) used for his Walking-beam piston INTAKE & EXHAUST Valves WAS.......

....Hoffman's Thermostatic Temperature Regulator Valves w/o the Thermostat control probe & associated connection hardware - JUST the double valve actuated poppet valves.

NOW, the question is: (having already paid my Machinist $425. for making some cutting adjustments to the valve that look worn)

1) Do I continue running up a bill with him to fix the seats that are no longer holding a tight seal
2) Have my machinist send the valve to an automotive specialty shop that would specifically know how to get these fixed to seal

or

3) Spend the same money acquiring a NEW Hoffman Regulator Valve

Your thoughts,

This may help in identifying the valve body type you have:

https://rcwapp.xyleminc.com/SS_1140-Bod ... hart.asp#1

You may be able to get service parts if the body isn't too damaged.

If possible, I'd either rebuild or replace them.

Parts are available: https://www.xylem.com/siteassets/brand/ ... s-800d.pdf (see page 30).

Thanks Bart. This same manual I stumbled over, but the graphics were not as sharp as your link. Gonna show this to my machinist tomorrow. I think we have the 05 Body configuration with the Union Connection.

I am still not clear if we have the 1" or the 1.5". There is clearly a 1 cast in the body housing (which is in good shape) above the directional arrow. But, the NPT connection size for the union is 1.5". I am confused as to which size I should be shopping for, should I decide to get a newer one.

I am with you. If my Machinist and/or Engine Specialist can get the seating issue worked out, I prefer to stay with exactly the Body I currently have and have three others just like it on the other intake and both exhausts.

Thanks so much for "bird dogging" this with me today. I am grateful.

As skilled, and affordable, manual machinists go the way of the dodo, I'd suggest if you have money to spare to both repair the one you have and get a new spare or two...

As for the sizing. Usually union threads are quite a bit larger than the actual piping for which it is for. I'm willing to bet that is the case here.

Good Friday Afternoon Gentlemen,

Ok, what I am certain I am looking for now is a Hoffman 1" Body Code 05 - 1140 Temperature Regular Body Unit Part #401353. Must be a Union Connection.

The only "new" source I've uncovered so far is State Supply Co. @ $1900. Guess I won't be going there.

Waiting to hear from the primary Hoffman distributor in Texas - Oslin Nation Co. (Xylem Brand Rep) in San Antonio, Tx.

So far, I've not found what I need on Ebay or Bing searches.

Suggestions?
