PDF Book on Triple and Quadruple Expansion engines
Hello All
While doing research today for the engine that I am in the process of designing, I came across an electronic copy of Triple & Quadruple Expansion Engines and Boilers, and their management. I have had some trouble finding literature specifically related to quadruple expansion engines, so if anyone is interested PM me and I'll share the google doc with you.

Thanks for the link, that should be more reliable and easier. Also, is anybody aware of other resources on quadruple expansion or compound reheat engines? I have a book with some of Porta's work ordered, but I'm trying to find all that I can.

Thanks for this excellent publication! Long nights of study here for me.
I also have the original Scientific American article about the "ARROW", a yacht that put Turbinia to shame in the late 1890s. This is the only triple reheat steam plant I have ever seen, and I have worked in steam power since the 1960's. This boat made 40 knots.
I guess I will try to scan it for all to have access.

Re: PDF Book on Triple and Quadruple Expansion engines
Thank you for the file Thom!
Look up the Halcyon Class minesweepers of the Royal Navy. They had 4-Cylinder compounds with the HP & LP sharing one common piston valve and the LP being a uniflow... The LP's were 180*opposed from the HP's so the HP's exhausted directly into the waiting LP, no receiver needed. Each HP & LP pair were essentially their own engine, combined together with the other pair.
I hope to build an engine similar to this one day.

I'd really appreciate that. I've never heard of triple reheat even in power plant service; usually the complexity outweighs the efficiency gains after two reheat cycles.fredrosse wrote:Thanks for this excellent publication! Long nights of study here for me.

Also, TahoeSteam, are you talking about the Halcyon class minesweepers or torpedo boats?

Thom, I apologize they were the mine sweepers.. I will scan the elevation drawing of the engines today.
Fred, I too would like to see the article on the Arrow
