Unknown engine - HELP identifying please

A special section just for steam engines and boilers, as without these you may as well fit a sail.

Unknown engine - HELP identifying please

Post by ianrichards » Thu Oct 04, 2018 8:47 am

Now here's a bit of a challenge.
I've been offered an engine for my steamboat project and I'm struggling to identify it.
The current owner whose father had it in his steamboat many moons ago thinks it's Dutch and dates from the 1930s, but that's all I know.
Apparently it has a 2 3/8" bore and 3" stroke.
Does anyone out there recognise it?
Thanks in advance
Ian

Strange, the picture was there yesterday.
Will check links again.

I believe this was an aux. engine to drive a pump or fan, very common on steam ships, it looks like the bracket which connected the pump/fan has been broken off.

p.s. forget photobucket, use the direct attachments box.

As a Dutchman I don't recognise this as a Dutch engine. I have a single cylinder here in my workshop , made by " Machinefabriek De Klop" in the town of Sliedrecht and I've seen a few Dutch fan or pump engines and a lot of them tend to have a cast column supporting the crosshead guide rather than the four columns this engine has. But having said that, I've just remembered that the high revving engines that drove the D.C generators made by " Smit of Slikkeveer" did have four columns. Later versions of these engines had an enclosed crankcase with pressure oil feed to the bearings. At a guess I would say that your engine could be a Mumford.

A couple of extra photos now that the engine is in my workshop.
