Boiler Maintenance

A special section just for steam engines and boilers, as without these you may as well fit a sail.

Boiler Maintenance

Post by csonics » Mon Nov 30, 2009 4:07 am

Could anybody recommend some good reading on cast iron boiler maintenance? I just acquired a nice little Eclipse F. E. boiler that looks like it could use some tlc...
Thanks!

Eclipse boiler is still in business - just burners now. But if you google "eclipse boilers" there's a lot of info.

Ron, yes, I did google them. I even found some guys on the smokestak forum that have one similar to mine. Mine is a bit older but similar VFT + burner. I'm am not really familiar with maintaining/restoring a cast iron boiler so I guess what I was really looking for was a book/knowledge on care and maintenance. It's old (1936), the walls are about .5in thick, rated to 175lbs WP, and seems to be complete. I'm going to do a water pressure test when I get a chance this week so I guess we'll see if it's worth putting the time and effort into... If anybody has any tips/suggestions I would very much appreciate it!
