Hi

Nothing of use has come up on my internet search except for this page about Boilersmiths in an ancestry website: [http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ ... lers-1.htm]

This does not include Mr Goodhand, but it suggests that a useful route into this is through somebody who is skilled in ancestry research. The site owner might be a good place to start, but somebody with full access to the various ancestry databases would be a better source of advice than me.

The date of the advert/plaque shown in the post would be very helpful if it is available.

Regards

Pete

Boiler-making for small vessels, and for traction engines etc. involves a very small community, and on that basis it would have been worth contacting Chatham Steam Ltd, The boiler yard, Detling Aerodrome ind. est.,Detling, Kent. Unfortunately, Chatham Steam went bankrupt a year or two ago, but all their assets were bought by the North Norfolk Railway Co., and are currently busy being used for repairs and replacement of steam locomotive boilers at their Weybourne works near Sheringham.

They are a friendly bunch of guys, and they might just know about other ex-boilermakers in Kent.

Hi Folks

I have just had this from my sister in law Mair, the family expert on all things historical.

"Thomas Peter Rowe Goodhand, born 29 March 1868, Medway, Kent, probably, though the 1939 Registers gives birth year of 1869. The latter gives his occupation as Master Boilerman. I can’t make out all the info. here, maybe you can (between the horizontal red lines). [In deep zoom it is clear that the rest of the red text says Boiler Manufacturer]

The 1911 Census has his occupation as small power engine and boiler maker. He died in Chatham, Kent, 25 October 1960, aged 92, remarkable because his parents Thomas and Mary Goodhand died at ages 45 and 36! His father’s occupation given in the 1871 Census was Decorator and Oilman. He lived at various addresses in the Gillingham, Kent area, including 54 High Street, Brampton in 1871, on Paget Street, Gillingham In 1901 and 1911, and 177 Marlborough St., in 1939 and 1960."

Mair says that further family information might be available if required.

Hope this pushes the case along a bit more.

Regards

Pete

No 149 Gillingham Road, is a dwelling house, typical mid to late 1800s, Victorian town house, so not the boiler works per say. Gillingham is situated on the Medway and only a stones-throw from Chatham Dockyard, so there is the boat connection.

Seems I finished up with a triple post, or a double one twice over!

I have hydraulically tested it go 160 and it seems fine, no leaks or cracks, there may be hope yet,
If mr Goodhand passed away in 1960 at the age of 92 , he might have made this boiler anytime from say 1890 when he was 22 or 1912 when the advert was in the paper he would have been 44
In any event this boiler must be 100 years old or there abouts , it has been around for a while
