Steam engine from the North Caucasus

A special section just for steam engines and boilers, as without these you may as well fit a sail.

The bearings on the connecting rods and the crankshaft are made of bronze. I am very interested in the question of the duration of the operation of such bearings. I'm building a steam engine that looks exactly like the compound steam engines of the late 19th century. I even want a 1/2 inch diameter copper tube steam cooler in the hull of the boat. Maybe someone has information about the duration of the operation of such bearings? How many hours can such bearings work without replacing them?

I on this forum saw o-rings on a bronze piston. I think this is the right decision. I also want to use bronze piston o-rings on my steam engine. Is there any evidence of the frequent use of such bronze sealing rings in steam engines of the late 19th century?

Well done! I do like the components that you have shown us in your photos. Big enough to see without the need for a magnifying glass! Some of us in the more Westerly parts of Europe have small boats and tiny steam plant.

Look forward to seeing your progress.

Regards

Pete

Bronze bearings with paper lubrication and periodic adjustments of clearance should last for many years of use.
Having just finished the difficult task (for our team) of pouring 4 new Babbitt bearings for the 3" diameter main crankshaft of a 10-ton steam tractor, I wish the bearings had been bronze!

Looks like a very nice engine you're building and doing a very good job of it.

Being an old time machinist, the lathe picture...when the hand leaves the chuck, the key goes with it. 😉

I salute the steam engine enthusiasts! Dear DetriTus, thanks for the feedback. Indeed, in the case you mentioned, you can lose not only an arm, but also a head. But this is when the machine starts working. In this photo, the accuracy of the assembled crankshaft was measured. There was no risk, the machine did not work. I am attaching some photos on which the machine worked. I turned the columns on the machine. This is what happened when I put them on a plateau.

I beg your pardon for misapplying DetriTug. I have difficulties with English. As an experienced turner, you will be interested in another photo. All cylinders were made on a lathe.
