Re: Steam engine from the North Caucasus
Greetings to the forum participants! I was able to complete the production of the high pressure steam cylinder box. Photo of the polishing process. I hope everything will be interesting. Ingvar.

Re: Steam engine from the North Caucasus
Is this part for a piston type steam admission and exhaust valve, or a cylinder for the main power piston?

Dear Fredrosse! Of course this part is a high pressure steam cylinder box. The valve will work as shown in the drawing, which I have already attached.

Greetings to the forum participants! I managed to finish making the eccentrics. The photo shows how they are attached to the crankshaft. The angle of installation of the eccentrics has not yet been determined. It is possible that forum members will give me advice on this issue. Ingvar.

Very good machine work.
When I made the eccentrics for my Locomobile the keyway on the crankshaft is in line with the crank throw top dead center, if I remember correctly. The keyways in the eccentrics are set at 45 degrees to low lobe. Your engine timing may be different.
It looks like you have a keyway cut in your eccentrics pointing at high cam lobe. I'm not certain, but I think you'll need individual keyways cut in your crankshaft 135 degrees both directions away from your crank throw.
The eccentrics I posted above are two sets. Example ''OS'' and ''OS'' are for one cylinder. One flips over on top of the other and both slide on the same key. Make sure to experiment before cutting as I am not completely certain. Maybe Bart or Fred can weigh in here.
(George Stephenson still confusing us 200 years later)

Re: Steam engine from the North Caucasus
I have computer software that evaluates steam engine performance, including slide valve timing events, with PV diagrams for both ends of the cylinder. Information that I think is available, plus some information needed, with ??? indicated. Please check my numbers and correct if necessary.
To evaluate engine performance the following data is needed:
1. Engine Type: Double Acting 2 Cylinder Compound Engine
(This engine will use a steam receiver between the HP and LP Cylinders???)
(This engine has HP & LP crankshaft bearing journals set 90 degrees offset???)
2. Engine Piston Bore and Stroke: 100mm + 170mm x 132.5mm Stroke
3. Engine Connecting Rod length, bearing center to bearing center = ???
4. Engine Valve Eccentric Stroke: 43.4mm
5. Engine Clearance Volume, this is steam volume in cylinder and ports from the steam valve to the piston, with piston at 0% stroke. The steam volume connected to the cylinder space with the piston at 0% stroke. ??? (This is typically 5% to 20% of piston swept volume, and should be small as practical)
6. Engine Steam inlet and exhaust conditions, Pressures??? (I am assuming 9 to 10 kg/cm2 steam gauge pressure??? Engine will be designed for atmospheric exhaust pressure, or about 1/3 atmosphere absolute for condensing plant???)
7. Engine RPM, ??? (I would think about 250 RPM is correct for this engine, because it is heavy built, however it can clearly be run faster for more power, My guess is about 350-400 RPM maximum, but that is just my opinion with limited information)
With this data the proper timing events, angle of advance and valve Lap & Lead can be evaluated for proper running. The angle of advance for valve eccentric will most probably be less than 45 degrees, as compound engines typically use less advance angle.

Re: Steam engine from the North Caucasus
I thank DetroiTug and Fredross for the recommendations given to me. I will take your advice and implement it when installing eccentrics on the crankshaft.
First, I will set the eccentrics at an angle of about 130-135 degrees.
I will test how the valve on the high pressure cylinder (first cylinder), which has yet to be manufactured, will work.
While I made all four eccentrics with bronze clamps. Photos of two of them, I managed to post on the site.
Unfortunately, I ran into difficulties with my old computer, so I had to use a new one. I forgot my username and password, so I couldn't get in touch for a while. Recently I managed to post one photo. I will try to post all the photos of what I was able to do. Once again, I would like to thank the forum participants for their assistance and very much needed recommendations.
Ingvar.
