TWIN 32 x 38 mm - steam engine for small boats or canoes

A special section just for steam engines and boilers, as without these you may as well fit a sail.

Drain cock operating valve

Post by dampfspieler » Wed Nov 03, 2021 3:45 pm

Kelly,

i received it in the second trial, thank you so much.

Hi all,

to operate the drain cock an operating valve is needed. The idea comes from a friends 5" steam loco. Depending on the requirements, the cylinder drain valves can also be arranged in groups with a single operating valve. Here a sectional view.

The d-slide-valves

Post by dampfspieler » Sun Nov 14, 2021 7:23 pm

Hi,

the slide valve bodies are ready. I have built them from gunmetal bar stock. The valve chests are also milled.

The sliding surfaces of the D slides were finely milled and honed on fine abrasive cloth.

Hi,

how to use the spanner is shown below.

The steam channel in the valve chest body was milled at an angle of 15° so that the resistance to the steam flow is as low as possible.

Hi Dietrich,

Nice work. Here is an idea to secure your packing glands. I made these leaf springs from 1095 steel, then tempered them. Very easy to make.

Looks like a robust solution for self disassembling engines! 8-)

I had a valve packing nut unscrew it self completely this summer. Luckily it didn't really interfere with anything - it just dropped down to the top of the valve slide. I stopped for a few seconds and spun it back on and got on my way.

Hi,

a lot of work was done. The flywheel was turned inside and out. It will attached to the crankshaft with a clamping set. Therefore the hub was turned out accordingly

The columnes were turned to length and the threads for the fastening bolts were tapped. They were made from 12 mm stainless steel.
