3 boats meet in east germany last weekend

Post by Rainer » Wed Aug 15, 2012 9:23 pm

Hello Steamboaters,

last weekend we had a little steam boat meet with 3 boats at the Schwarzer See = "Black Lake".. You can find it in Google Earth by typing in this address:
Flecken Zechlin Strandweg 5, Germany

Wonderful lake system for steam boating.

You will find a discription of the boats here
Lagom:http://www.steamboating.de/boats/lago-main.html
Min Deern: http://www.steamboating.de/boats/min-main.html
Horus: http://www.steamboating.de/boats/hor01-main.html

Will show some more pictures and videos later...

Lagom is about 4 m long and is driven by a 2"x2" single.
Min Deern is build from an Elliot Bay Hull and driven by a Pearl Twin

Wow... there are a LOT of lakes in that region, and it looks like most of them are connected together. Are the links between the lakes canals that a boat can pass through?

Yes, mostly all lakes are connected. You can travel from this lakes to Berlin or Hamburg via the river Elbe.

Have a look at this map. It don't show all the smal lakes with it's connections but gives you a rough overview of the huge water way system. The meet was nearly in the middle of this map - find the town "Zechlin". The air line Zechlin - Berlin is about 100 km equal about 250 km on water ways.

All this is ex East German territory. They kept this system running because of the bad roads and the lack of trucks. When this would have been in West Germany before the iron curtain came down, half of the canals would be filled up to build a good road and the other half would be closed by the green party for not disturbing the mating habits of a seldom water flea or so. Meanwhile this water ways are a big tourist magnet and help the region to survive...

IF you follow this link, Google will show you some pictures from this region

Rainer,
Thank you for the extra information. By chance, I was just looking at information about the State of Brandenburg, and in the tourism part they have a whole section about the waterways and all the things you can do in them. Perhaps you can someday have a larger annual meet there for people in Germany and other European countries.

I think I would very much like to visit Potsdam someday. To me, it's actually more interesting than Berlin.
