Aren't these things mentioned in the SALT treaty under Weapons of Mass Destruction?

Along with bagpipes and banjos, of course.

Bagpipes are fine in their proper enviroment: i.e. a Scottish hillside at least a quarter mile away.

I have a cartoon out of The New Yorker showing a pipe marching band with one of the front row pipers using a cat instead of a set of pipes. The tail gripped in the piper's mount and the limbs being pulled sharply. The cat objecting loudly.

The piper says to the next band member, "No one has noticed."

Now Why is a banjo offensive? ;)

Moderate steam whistle use is fine if you just are reasonable about it.

Many people rarely have the opportunity to hear them nowdays. It's simple good steamboat Public Relations to have a whistle and know how to use it.

Inverse square law, better to toot 20 feet from a dock then at the dock. I point out to passengers I have ear plugs available in various styles onboard in the Personal Propetective Equipment (PPE) bag.

Even at a public Dock if you just get peoples attention and say, "Hey I'm going to blow my whistle - small children or those sensitive should put your hands on your ears." and give everybody close a heads up it's not an issue. I've done that myself, and the 10 people nearby were left smiling.

So far the public keeps telling me they could go with a little more cow bell!

Who said anything about the whistle on a launch?

Until you have experienced a calliope as close quarters you cannot truly have suffered! Note that these units are designed to be operated electronically at a civilized distance from a computer. I have played one and was most grateful for the ear protection provided.

Do these entertaining but alarming machines exist outside of the U.S.? They seem like a very typical example of yank barbarism like fuel dragsters and rap music.

By the way, I enjoy calliopes. But then again I also get a kick out of fuel dragsters.

Hi Mike,
Yes, these do exist across the pond as they say...Definitely loud and can be offensive when played aimlessly.Earplugs are required for anyone on the SS NORMAN J , while playing the calliope. So far I've managed to entertain the folks around Michigan this summer, with an invite for rides next year as well. If you have a chance look up Devils Lake Steamboats Facebook page, as I had s chance to participate with the regatta this summer...
I've recently sold a calliope to a german fellow and now one for an French artist who will be traveling down the Mississippi this coming summer(2018), wanting to play the calliope at various stops along the way. The vessel was shipped this week to my building for retrofit for both a Calliope and upgrading for the Mississippi journey. He plans to have the vessel shipped back to France after the excursion.
More of a hobby than my day job....but is gratifying ..
Happy steaming..
Kenny g
