One of the entertaining things I do with the boat is a total blowdown whenever I'm not going to be using the boat for a month or so. As soon as the fire is down to a few embers of wood I open up the blowdown all the way from anything up to 100 p.s.i. It's a 1.5" pipe and the noise and commotion sounds like a small jet airplane departing. I warn any bystanders and they seem to enjoy the sight and sound. The steam jet reaches out as much as 30 feet.

The remaining embers dry the boiler and then I close things up tight. If it's the last steaming of the year I then use my wet or dry vacuum to empty the piping and pumps.

Since I do all of my steaming on drinking water I don't get much crud buildup. That $30 price for a meter has me thinking about a more solid engineering attitude towards this issue.
