The Margaret S. has 9 notches forward and 9 notches astern. This is controlled with a brass handle (about 1 inch diameter x 4 inches long). A twist of the wrist (like a motorcycle throttle) loosens the latch, then it swings up to unhitch from the link-up notches. I then shift to the cutoff I want, and swing the lever down, engaging the link-up notch I want. If I am going to keep that setting for a long time then a twist of the wrist draws the lever into the notch plate, so everything is tight for continuous running. All this is one hand operation.
