Time for some snazzy insulation.

Ceramic or glass fiber from mcmaster - I got it a long time ago for this purpose.


Mahogany slats. Inside side - tacks and copper plated hanger. Too bad no one will see it, this wouldn't look bad on the outside if I paid more attention to the nailing of the tacks.

That looks like ceramic fibre blanket rather than glass. If you've got enough, go round again, or more, if you can, thicker the better. Really does hold back the heat.

Sorry, didn't quite have enough to do another wrap. I think you are correct, it's ceramic.

Added Brass Straps to hold the lagging.
I used Copper+Brass pop rivets to join 2 strips of 1" wide brass for each band. Stainless steel turn buckles and U bolts hold the straps together.

I'm pretty happy with the result.

It appears I may have enough mahogany to do the upper portion, at least partially - but I don't have enough brass strapping. I might have to use stainless cable. Not sure if that will look ok, but I could always put it together and replace the cable strapping at a later date. I found a different ceramic insulation for the top that is more like a mat then a blanket.

The copper/brass pop rivets were the worst part. They look fine, but the pins? They would sort of shatter when rivetting them with the pop rivet tool, leaving sharp edges.

Please tell us who built your boiler and if they are a "Code Boiler Shop." You say it's an ASME boiler, but is it a code boiler? Is it stamped? I'm looking for a Code shop that has the R stamp to retube my boiler.

It is indeed built to the ASME code and stamped and filed with the National Board. I'm willing to skimp on a lot of things, but boilers, steam piping, fittings, and valves is not one of those categories for me.

Lots of activity on the Nyitra. Looking at buying a new trailer very soon. Will get and add third pontoon. Removing decking and getting 3/4" Marine Plywood. Lagging top of Boiler. Trying to get advice from Ohio DNR (Department of Natural Resources) Watercraft Division on the inspection that will be needed to be completed after third pontoon is added.

Tentatively trying to hit the water for sea trials end of summer/early fall.

Bolts are rusted, oxy acetyele cutting has been invalueable. Just watch the aluminum bits CB!

Fancy Accessory just got in the mail today. An injector discharge funnel. You place it below the discharge of the injector,
so you can observe the discharge but not get the deck awash.
