boiler and engine spacing

I have a 50 sqft similar to a Roberts type WT boiler with dimensions of 27" wide by 36" long. the door is 12" wide. how much space should I leave between the engine and the boiler for wood/coal/cleaning access?
How long is a typical steam plant? without propshaft. 8'?

I'd mock this up, or set it up w/ everything movable and try it out. One test is really worth a thousand expert opinions here.

As Bart says, mock it up, if you haven't made them, mock up your fire irons (rake particularly) and use them in the space provided. You also need to consider what else youare doing in that space, ie are you planning single handed operation, in which case how does engine/boiler operation relate to helm position, especially for berthing. if single handing, whats your engine, and will it require access to the flywheel during berthing etc?
Take a look at other boats, then play around with your layout to whatever best suits your needs.

From the looks of it, JonP has been making great headway on his engine!
